By changing the cam timing (retard, advance/overlap), you tune the overall drivability

For SOHC applications advancing your cam timing will improve bottom-end power
while retarding the camshaft timing will improve top-end power. DOHC applications
can be adjusted individually and different combinations should be attempted with
